EducationHaverford College - BA, History
ExperienceMy time at Haverford College, where I earned a bachelor's degree in History and Classics, instilled the desire to tutor in me. While spending a year at Oxford University, I received tutoring and realized how important it is for students who need it. I have either tutored or taught since that time. I began by tutoring chemistry and found it enjoyable. However, history and writing quickly became two of my favorite subjects to tutor. I enjoy history because the dynamics are so complex and writing because I get to help my students express their thoughts. In addition to those subjects, I tutor literature, ESL, geography, religious studies, and the subjects tested in the SAT. I believe in creating a pleasant environment of trust where students can focus on learning to decipher and communicate thoughts and ideas. I show students ways to determine how small parts fit into a whole - a skill that translates into other areas of life by helping them become thoughtful individuals. In addition to tutoring, I have taught ESL at a Chinese university. This experience also helped me further develop the strategies I use when I tutor. My interests outside of graduate school and tutoring include backpacking, playing the clarinet, hiking, reading, and learning new languages.
